An Old Friend

Posted in Casual Wanderings by meghannchapman on July 17th, 2012

I wanted to tell you about someone.  He’s quite possibly my oldest friend {minus cousins}.  This is Snowball.  We’ve been friends since my ninth birthday.

My Papaw {an old cowboy from Nebraska} called me up and asked me what I wanted for my birthday.  We’d be visiting soon and he wanted to have it ready.  Nine-year-old little me knew exactly what she wanted: a solid white cat to call ‘Snowball.’  Papaw told me I would have just that.

When our conversation ended, Teeyl got on the phone and fussed at him for his promise.  She told him our landlord wouldn’t allow another animal and that is would be best to forget the whole idea.

But you never met my Papaw.

When we arrived for our yearly visit, Papaw led me out to the barn, first thing.  He had not just one cat, but three.  Two were orange and white, playful and friendly.  The third was shy and hidden amongst the feed barrels.  As everyone went back to their welcomes, I managed to coax the little guy out.  He was a solid white little ball of fur.  As a storm blew in, I bundled the little guy up into the bib of my overalls and headed for the house.

We’ve been pals ever since.

Snowball is 18 years old this year.  He resides back in his home state with my Dad and Teeyl.  My heart felt a twinge at saying goodbye to him when our last visit was over.  I made sure to say it with extra meaning and affection.  I fear I never know when it will be the last.  His health is fair, but his years are long.

He’s definitely one of the family.  The oldest of three cats {not the two prior mentioned}.  But I won’t lie, he’s the best cat I’ve ever seen or owned.  Loyal to the bone.

{Revised 2-7-13: We sent Snowball off the the big kitty afterlife a little over a week ago. He lived to be 18, almost 19, years old. That’s a really long time for a cat. My parents held onto him until it was obvious he just wasn’t comfortable any more. Without lots of medicines and pain relief, he just wasn’t going to make it.  And we didn’t want to try to force him through it..  Saying goodbye was a lot harder than I expected, being 10 hours away.}

Such a good picture and such a good cat.  I had told Teeyl not to worry there was no way Harlan could come up with a snow white cat. At a family dinner at my sister-in-law’s at Oshkosh NE,  I was laughing about his promise and darned if she didn’t say our neighbors have more cats than they know what to do with and I know they’ve  got some white ones. So that’s how we came home with three cats! I believe that nine year old girl was meant to have her cat!!  Love you, mamaw

Thanks for the rest of the story, Mamaw! He sure did mean to keep that promise, huh?!

Seriously, older cats are the BEST. So chill. I want one!

Aren’t they?  The one we have here at home has been a blessing, as well.  He’s only two years old, but he’s so lazy and chill.  He used to let toddling little Lilie push him around in her shopping cart while he just kicked back for a nap.  The neighbors’ girls adore him.

I will never forget watching you walk up to the house with Snowball crammed in your bibs!  As it rained and thundered, he slept on the back of the sofa which was in front of a window.  I always knew he was thinking to himself…”I’ve got it made”.  He’s 18 and his com-padres are long gone. ;-)  I love the picture!

Yeah, he is a *little* spoiled, huh? Those other two out in the barn were probably cussing him. LOL

That is a lovely photo, and 18 years is very impressive. It kind of gives me hope because while I have two cats, a female and a male, my female will be seven this year and she is getting up to that age when she needs to go to the vet twice as much and make sure her health is in tip top shape. It made me realize that she’s getting older, and quickly, and I really didn’t want to have to think about her mortality. It’s just a really difficult thing to think about when it comes to a pet that has been a part of your family for so long and who you really can’t imagine not being around anymore.

I am so glad to meet another cat person. As soon as I saw the picture, I wanted to see more. 18 is a long time.  I had one cat for 19 years and then one for 17. They were as much a part of my family as my children.

Oh… how special is that relationship.  I hope you have many more years with Snowball, but if not, I am glad you have such fond memories!

What a sweet story; your Papaw sounds great!  I’m *very* allergic to cats, but have always one.  They’re so beautiful.

You and that kitty are fortunate as many all white cats have a recessive gene that causes blindness. It’s great that you have enjoyed each others love for so long. I to have cats. More than I need, but they apparently are too lazy to catch mice, so they need me. They were outside/inside cats until they brought their second badly maimed baby rabbit home. That’s when we locked the door.

Yes, we know all about the “gifts” kitties like to bring. We had a cat that kept wanting to bring our gifts the the back door, which just so happened to mean INSIDE the garage. Not so pleasant, but didn’t want to punish him bc in his eyes, it was his way of showing gratitude and love. He couldn’t be an inside cat anymore, though, bc of the new landlord’s wishes.
Thanks so much for reading and commenting, John!
